The sign is reflected in the windows at Luma Park, an old factory building in Hammarby Sjöstad in southern Stockholm.

Saltsjöqvarn

Saltsjöqvarn mill, built in 1890 on the shore of Saltsjön (salt lake) in the entrance to Stockholm. The mill is now closed and flats are being built in the surroundings. The building itself is regarded as architecturally valuable because it is in its original state.

Hazelius' Skansen

Skansen is the oldest open-air museum in the world, founded by Artur Hazelius in 1891. Through living history Hazelius wanted to show how people in different parts of Sweden used to live and work in older days. The museum - and the zoological park - is open year around and well worth a visit. On the photo we see a bust of the founder close to the gate bearing his name.

destruction/construction redux

We once again turn our lenses towards the (not so) old mail centre at Klara to see how mankind is progressing. I count four machines against one building.

Yes, exactly here is the border between the cities of Solna and Stockholm.

winter waterway

As Per wrote today on Stockholm by pixels: "We travel across our waterways, we fish in the inner city and during those flickering short moments of Nordic summer we swim in this surprisingly clean water" and "January 2008 didn't bring us any winter weather".

So true. This photo was taken a fortnight ago in South central Stockholm. The house is on the isle Reimersholme and the marina on the right is on the island of Långholmen. The canoeist is on his way from Riddarfjärden where lay City Hall on Per's photo.

what's missing

The question of the day is "What's _issing _n Stockh_lm City?". I don't know where to begin, but as the _issing letters spell MIO I guess what's missing (in their twisted minds) is a MIO furniture store right in the middle of everything. I couldn't agree less. But who am I to say? Except that Stockholm is a nice city anyway. Why don't you come visit us?

bandy

Bandy is a game played on an ice field the size of a soccer field, using a single round ball about the size of a tennis ball, but rock hard. Two teams of eleven players each compete to get the ball into the other team's goal using sticks. Here we see spectators entering the Zinkensdamm arena where the home team Hammarby today beat visiting Sandviken by 8 goals to 2 in the premiere bandy league. Turn to Wikipedia for everything you ever wanted to know about bandy.

christmas in progress

Once again the investment company Kinnevik (the Stenbeck family) astonishes passers-by when they built a Christmas fir tree out of - fir trees. In 2006 this handmade tree was the worlds highest Christmas tree measuring nearly 40 meters in hight. I see no reason why they should have made it shorter this year. The artificial - but then again not - tree can bee seen at Skeppsbron.

Old Town on a misty November day - as seen from Stadsgårdshamnen. Stadsgårdshamnen is a harbour in central south where Baltic Sea party ships and international cruise ships moor.

Essingeleden is the backbone of traffic in or through Stockholm. It is also a part of European route E4 connecting northern Finland with southern Sweden. This photo was taken from the heights of Fredhäll.

party waves

Viking Line's Cinderella - a floating night club and amusement ship - is arriving Stockholm Stadsgårdskajen. Cinderella is 191 meters long and 29 meters wide and carrying some 2500 passengers. It makes a daily cruise from Stockholm to Mariehamn on the Åland Isles and back again, a trip that - including stops and slow speed - takes 21 to 22 hours. Just behind Cinderella is another party ship arriving - the Birka Paradise. It's makes the same daily trip.

All Saints’ Day

The All Saints’ Day feast occurs in Sweden on the first Saturday after 1 November. On this day all the saints that don’t have a particular day of their own are celebrated. Traditionally Swedes visit their ancestors’ graves and light candles. It can be a quite spectacular scene, here we see Eds Church outside Upplands Väsby in the greater Stockholm.

The Royal guard has only a silly little hut while the King has a whole block of rooms. I wonder what the guard is doing - is he sending a SMS to his colleagues? "Come quick. I need to go to the ...."
