upgraded viking ship

Traditional Viking ships have been upgraded over the years. The square sail is gone. Other features have been added, here are a couple of lifeboats.

eye-catching

You don't need a yacht to catch some fish in the city. Sometimes you can have it all at once but this gentleman didn't seem overly impressed by the Pelorus or maybe he was just tired of all people snapping photos around him.

Bird at sail boat

I don't know how to translate the Swedish expression "bryggseglare" but the owner of this boat must be true one. A "bryggseglare" is a person who owns a boat and most of the time hangs around in the marina instead of being out sailing, he or she also talks very much and always has a story to tell. Picture taken at Ekerö outside Stockholm in Lake Mälaren.

Loading or unloading

Sometimes when you need to move a boat you need a boat. This is the northernmost part of Stockholm County at position N60°12'58" E018°43'32".

tre kronor

A brig is a two-masted ship with both masts carrying square sails. Here's the brig Tre Kronor ("Three Crowns") at Skeppsholmen. This is a new vessel, constructed in the 1990's with support from a 4000 member brig society.

nice boat

For a few days the Pelorus visited Stockholm. I couldn't resist to have a look. After all it's said to be the 11th largest yacht in the world, and how many times do you have a chance to see something like that in Stockholm? It's impressive. Here a shot from an elevated spot

and here from behind. Not your average boat I'd say....and by the way, it's the same "thing" that Per showed us a glimpse of yesterday on Pixels. There's more to come.

the af-Chapman again

I've given this picture of the af-Chapman a sepia tone, in keeping, I hope with its age.

What would it have looked like in the 1950s when it first began service as a youth hostel?

How different, I wonder, will it look when it is returned in 2008.

af Chapman

Earlier I showed you some rigging.

Here is the whole ship.

Seemingly it entered service as the Dunboyne in 1888 and once carried passengers between Ireland and Australia. During World War II it was a Swedish Navy barracks ship.

Since 1949, the af-Chapman , as it is now known, has been used as a youth hostel.

Shortly after this picture was taken, it was towed away for renovation, but is due to return later this year.

Rigging

The rigging of a three-masted schooner.

If you look closely you may see a seagull in there somewhere.

What's the ship?
Where has it been?
Where is it going?

Some of you will know. I'll show you more later.

last summer

At the North Hammarby Harbor opposite Hammarby Sjöstad, a lot of ships can be found that are used as floating summer houses or as permanent homes.

clupea harengus

A pile of canoes waiting for warmer seasons by the Djurgården Bridge. Those of us who remember the very first days of stockholm by pixels will recall Stefan's intriguing herrings. Here is my belated tribute to those "herrings"!

Returning to Birka Paradise, this is a shot from the countdown. It's an hour before takeoff with road traffic on Stadsgårdsleden in the foreground.

View From a Bridge

With winter solstice being over and done with, we can finally begin looking forward, seeing a bit more daylight each and every day - and this set of pictures is a reminiscent of the glorious, luscious summer past as well as a reminder of what lies ahead of us. In just a few months time we can hopefully enjoy this view from a bridge called the Western once again.

And if we've been nice enough, someone might treat us to a coffee break named fika at this semi-secret hideout below the bridge. With a wonderful and relaxing view over the city we love so much...

party waves

Viking Line's Cinderella - a floating night club and amusement ship - is arriving Stockholm Stadsgårdskajen. Cinderella is 191 meters long and 29 meters wide and carrying some 2500 passengers. It makes a daily cruise from Stockholm to Mariehamn on the Åland Isles and back again, a trip that - including stops and slow speed - takes 21 to 22 hours. Just behind Cinderella is another party ship arriving - the Birka Paradise. It's makes the same daily trip.

Lady of Leisure

This lady of leisure enjoying the last rays of Indian summer could be found at Norr Mälarstrand in September - I hope she has since decided to hop ashore, enjoying her leisurely self inside instead, since the temperatures on offer in Stockholm these days are anything but sunbath inviting...
