bergshamra kyrka

Bergshamra Church from 1962 was designed to blend into the center of this new suburb so it was made entirely out of concrete

The Whole Tram

My previous picture here included the top of a tram.

Here is the whole of the tram.

What these two workers are doing, I am not sure. Perhaps they may be re-laying some cables.

water week: corrosively yours

Water is corrosive stuff. Cars and other vehicles are constantly being eaten away and the costs are, well, fantasillions. This, incidentally, is the roof of a car near the Karlberg Canal and so far it looks nice.

water week: behind the boathouse

There's a first for everything. This was the first sunny, lazy afternoon of spring by Norrviken.

The Scottish Play

Here is the Dramaten one of Stockholm's many theatres.

They are putting on Shakespeare's "Scottish Play". I don't know if it is the case in Sweden but it is a superstition in the UK that saying the word "Macbeth" whilst in a theatre is bad luck for the performers. To avoid risking the luck of the actors and performances, Macbeth is commonly referred to as "The Scottish Play".

You can also see here, the top of a tram. More of that later.

water week: bath ducks

bath ducks with rescue crew. This picture is taken at Jungfrusunds marina 2007 a exhibition, yes it is warm water and they were cold after several hours practicing in lake Mälaren during the Mälarö island fair last year.

The lost arena

Lady's and Gentlemen let me present the lost seat section of the home arena for the Bromma Pojkarna BP (Bromma Boys). No wonder they just made a guest season in the Swedish Premier football division last year.

water week: defroster on

For months people were merrily skating around here all day long. When I stopped by Medborgarplatsen ("the Citizens' Plaza") three weeks ago the ice was rather miserable as you can see. Now of course it's all gone.

Springtime Stockholm, part 1 (5)

080329 002

The month of April is notoriously capricious, yet full of promise and hope of greener, lusher days. This is the time for dusting down that ol' garden hose. Not to mention, bringing out those long time not seen garden furniture. And if you happen to have a lyre nearby, the perfect time to play a little celebratory tune.

080329 003

This particular garden with furniture can be found at one of Stockholm's suburbs most delightful cafes, Lyran (The Lyre), anno 1867.

mid-month theme: subway day

Our sister blog pixels is celebrating subway day with the big guys. We on plenty won't be left out! Here's an interior shot from our modern fleet of subway cars. They're quiet, they're comfortable and with fewer bigger cars you feel less isolated and more safe when traveling at odd hours.

Berzelii Park

Nobody responded to my last post on dry land.

Whether you didn't know or didn't care, no matter.

This is Berzelii Park, or at least the entrance thereto. In the hot summer of 1951, it was the scene of the so called Berzelii Riots, when bored, and often drunk young people gathered in the park night after night. The continuing riots escalated and reached their peak on the night of August 26, when there was a stand off between 3000 young people and policemen called in from five different cites, including military police.

Whether these stones are some kind of memorial to that day, I have no idea. At first I thought it was an outdoor chess set, but clearly it is some sort of artwork. Is it still there?

barbapapa

Barbed wire, however strong and painful when directly approached, is actually very shy and rarely breeds in captivity. Here's a small colony enjoying the afternoon sun by Norrviken.

On dry land

I'm back on dry land now, but where?

Do you recognize this place?

For all I know there are many places in the city with the same sort of ground, but then again it might be unique to this one.

here's looking at you

Feeling a bit congested today? Well, Stockholm did so we got ourselves a brand new tax. (You know how serious we Swedes are about our taxes so naturally we wouldn't be taking this matter lightly!) The congestion tax was accompanied by a large outcry of populous discontent. Then we had local elections, the opposition came to power and wisely changed their minds making this whole matter a non-issue. The tax is imposed on Swedish registered vehicles driving into and out of the inner city on weekdays between 6.30 a.m. and 6.29 p.m. Air quality is up, traffic congestion is down and the tax brings additional money to reinvest in our infrastructure. Vehicles are registered automatically at “control points”, here we see a bunch of cameras busy operating at the Skanstull Bridge.

daily photo theme day: water music

Today is a "water" theme day on pixels so we on plenty want part of the fun as well. Here is another one of them "views from a bridge". Behind all that dark water is the home of the Royal Swedish Opera.
