giraffes

Last week I asked are we near the zoo?

The answer is not really, but on the shore here are these cranes that have been painted to look like giraffes.

universitetet

The main campus of Stockholm University is located in Frescati. Signal colours and the letters A-F help students (and staff!) navigate in and between the six main buildings. The architecture is not pretty, still pretty functional.

red houses on Södermalm (2)

On Åsögatan, at the corner of Sågargatan, the red houses are found in very peculiar places

stadsbiblioteket

Not much of a winter view, it looks pretty much the same a month later and we're in for another mild weekend. Here's the City Library.

are we near the Zoo?

Is this stretch of water near the zoo?

What is it that might make one think so?

semaphore

We've already been inside this railway semaphore in Marievik. Here's a shot from the outside.

red houses on Södermalm

On the southeastern parts of Södermalm there are still plenty of old red wooden houses. Some of them are grouped together like a small community in the middle of highways and modern housing.

clupea harengus

A pile of canoes waiting for warmer seasons by the Djurgården Bridge. Those of us who remember the very first days of stockholm by pixels will recall Stefan's intriguing herrings. Here is my belated tribute to those "herrings"!

birka party countdown

Returning to Birka Paradise, this is a shot from the countdown. It's an hour before takeoff with road traffic on Stadsgårdsleden in the foreground.

mid-month theme: subway day

The subway is a treasure for anyone interested in signs. There are all sorts. This one shows us how much longer we'll have to wait and where we might end up if we take the next train.

Reading by the Mill

Last week I asked if people knew where the man was reading.
Pia was of course spot on and although Peter edged his bets, he did us a map. He was indeed by the Mill as this larger picture shows.

after the snow came

This street is called Urvädersgränd and is situated on top of Götgatsbacken. The famous Swedish poet and composer Carl Michael Bellman (1740-1795) used to live in the orange house.

urban tree

This tree by Odengatan has seen quite a few Christmas holidays come and go. If you're a tree, January is perfect for resting. Regaining your strength. Before long all those green leaves are due again.
